We were having a similar problem with US Robotics modems connecting to our
PM3's running 3.8.2. What we finially found out was that the USR modems
were trying to negociate X2 before V.90. What we had to do was to disable
X2 and force V.90 only (init string S32=34) and everything seems to work
fine. So far I haven't noticed any problems with the USR's since we
upgraded to 3.8.2c2, but you might want to still give it a shot.
