Are those OEM Winmodems? There's a batch of OEM USR Winmodems (at least
here in Canada) that are sold at about 50% of the price of the "real"
winmodems. They are sold without support from 3COM and also the drivers
updates are far less frequent. They come with numbers like 2974, 2975...
Poor 3com... They always do things differently. Most OEM modems owner
have access to the same code as their "boxed" counterpart but it's not the
case for 3com Winmodems. I also heard (and I may be mistaken) that TC rack
owners have to pay for OS updates... Although a debate could be done
arguing the virtues of a free "broken" ComOS versus a paid "working" TC
Rack OS, eventualy, Lucent will put it together and we'll just have to pray
that the v90 protocol will die with the analog modems in 10 years!
About ComOS, I haven't seen any concrete proof that 3.8.2c2 is any better
than 3.8.2 but I haven't anything to say the contrary either so I guess I
will beleive that there is some "hidden" enhancements.
The latest drivers for those are on my FTP server:
ftp://ftp.bbsi.net/pub/modem/Usr-3com/usrcdoem.zip
If yours is a little older (ISA) it may not be in the bunch and included in
the previous release of the drivers:
ftp://ftp.bbsi.net/pub/modem/Usr-3com/usr3c-cd.zip
The success rate of these modems seems to be highly dependent on the line
quality. I have had some clients bringing their computer here and it would
connect without any problem and at their house, it would never connect.
The drivers included in the first file I mentionned seem to help in many
cases but the ones in the last file I mentionned are date from june 98 and
do not help in any circumstances I've come to see.
When nothing works, I've had great success at this URL:
http://808hi.com/56k/x2-linklimit.htm
Especially with an init string like: "&U8&N26" wich limits the speed to
40,000bps.
I wish you good luck.
