If this continues, it probably should move to the modems list.

I've never heard of that modem...if it didn't ship with a Mac modem cable,
be sure the user has a "high speed modem cable"...a printer cable looks the
same on the outside but breaks handshaking.

"Connecting at an unknown rate" means the modem script which has been
selected (which is what the Modem control panel actually selects) doesn't
understand the speed the modem has reported (there is an awful cascade of
match statements, each branching to a different label, followed by a branch
to the "Connecting at an unknown rate" report).

By itself, "Connecting at an unknown rate" isn't a problem...it merely
points to a script mismatch. I've run many many hours connected at "an
unknown rate".

The modem script also contains the INIT string...so if it isn't matched to
the modem bad things may very well happen.

Snippets from a sample script:

Here we try the INIT a few times...the INIT in this case is at least being
accepted with an OK response:

matchclr
matchstr 1 4 "OK\13\10"
matchstr 2 101 "ERROR\13\10"
write "AT&F1E0W2S95=45S0=0&D3S7=60\13"
matchread 90
inctries
iftries 3 101

And after much armwaving, we get to:

matchclr
matchstr 1 39 "1200\13"
matchstr 2 39 "1200/"
matchstr 3 40 "2400\13"
matchstr 4 40 "2400/"
matchstr 5 41 "4800\13"
matchstr 6 41 "4800/"
...and so on
matchstr 27 62 "48000"
matchstr 28 63 "50000"
matchstr 29 64 "52000"
matchstr 30 65 "54000"
matchstr 31 66 "56000"
matchread 30
jump 71

Here's the code from one of the successes:
...
@LABEL 66
note "Communicating at 56000 bps." 2
CommunicatingAt 56000
jump 72
...
And here's label 71 (and what follows)

@LABEL 71
note "Communicating at an unknown rate." 2
jump 72
!
! Look for reliablilty and compression results
! at the end of the connect result.
!
@LABEL 72
...
Here we look for LAPM and all the other possible interesting goodies.

(Fortunately, MacOS does provide a method for generating this garbage...it
involves logging in by hand and saving, and then asking that a script be
generated...I've never done it, and don't know the details. So given a Mac
guru, you should be able to get a working script...I doubt very much
whether this modem came with one.)
