I have tried adding 3-4 commas after the phone number. This either a) makes
no difference or b) with enough commas, causes the handshake to revert to a
steady tone then eventually timeout.
I have searched the web for init strings for these modems with very little
sucess. I have just gone through all the init strings for Rockwell
28.8/33.6 modems I have been able to find on the web--even Rockwell modems
with slightly different chipsets. The results are either ERROR (or as
Windows would say, "The computer is not receiving a response from the
modem... bla bla"), or no difference in connection ability whatsoever.
A couple customers have even FAXed me their modem manuals, but as you would
guess, the manuals are VERY generic and tell how to change speaker volume,
tone/pulse dialing, etc... nothing really of any value.
Has anyone else dealt with these hardware-based Rockwell modems and have a
possible solution? Even a 14.4k or 9600bps connection would probably be
enough to satisify many of these customers, as most people with modems that
old are not hard-core netaddicts, and something suitable for simply checking
e-mail would satisfy them.
Thank you for any insight you might have.
