Is it possible to have your customer try to connect from a different
telephone line?
A noisy "drop" from the phone company might manifest itself in the manner
you described.

I am having some probs getting a Compaq Presario Laptop modem to even get
connected let alone stay connected. The modem is reported as a 336 VSC
running version 1.26 of the firmware.

When it connects, the customer gets garbage immediately. This is just using
Hyperterm, not even DUN. She has to turn off the laptop an back on a couple
of times and try a couple more times before it will connect. It says Connect
26400 or 31200 with v42 but then garbage. It works only about 1/4th of the
time. This is dialing into a PM 3 and it does the SAME thing dialing into
our backup PM 2 banks with 336 supra modems on them.

I dont find anything on this modem at Compaq's website. Any ideas?
