I have had, on occasion, told a customer this. Obviously they tend to get quite
upset.
It really is a shame how manufacturers are skimping on what may be a very vital
part
of a computer system. The best modem that I find that really works with ComOS
3.8.2c2
is the Diamond SupraExpress 56K. It just works! (Don't confuse it with the
SupraMax.
The SupraMax is a winmodem. Ugh.)

My landlord had a problem with his AOpen 56K internal modem frequently
disconnecting
him. Even s10=40 wouldn't help. I limited the top speed of his modem with an
AT+MS=
command (Parameters can be found with a AT+MS=? command) to 46,000 bps and it
made his modem rock solid.

Actually, I demanded an explanation from Keating Technologies, which is the
distributor
for 3Com Products here in Canada.
Apparently, 3Com already had a lot of the V.90 code in place when they wrote
the code
for the majority of their modems, a year prior to the V.90 ratification. When
3Com helped come
out with the V.90 ratification, many of their modems met the spec already. 3Com
then saw no
reason to change the code on any of their modems. Don't forget that 3Com had a
huge hand in
defining what the V.90 standard was going to be. I am under the understanding
that they did
have to change some V.90 code on some Courier modems but that's pretty much it.
