(PMOD) Motorola SM56 (Was: 3.9b22 and A-OPEN FM56/P)

Although the SM56 is not what the original post was about, I thought I'd
just throw this in. We're seeing the same thing that Jake is with the
SM56. It is connecting very well with the PM3--a big imporvement over how
things were several months ago. The key, however is having the latest
driver/firmware/whatever-you-want-to-call-it. We had a customer recently
who had one of these. The modem would connect, but only at 14,400, and
then it would disconnect often. I think it was running driver build 54.
An upgrade to the latest driver available on Motorola's website fixed it.
For those who might be wondering, that address is:

http://www.mot.com/networking/products/softmodem.html

Immediately after the upgrade, it would connect very solidly at 50,666.
Someone recently posted that they thought the SM56 was the worst modem out
there. I used to beleive this, but now I disagree... I think that honor
should be held by PC-Tel. At least you can get up-to-date "generic"
drivers from Motorola's website. PC-Tel offers *no* driver support. They
have an "ask your modem manufacturer" policy only. That's fine if the
customer *knows* who made their modem--most don't.
