While the modems that don't connect to our Lucent modems do usually work
with our USR Total Control rack, our USR rack gives us tons more headaches;
cards that just simply stop working, giving deadair to people calling in,
sometimes starting to negotiate but steadfastly refusing to go anywhere.
Our philosophy has generally been that no box will support all modems
perfectly; we've stuck with Portmasters as our mainstay but are about ready
to retire the USRs (we've been playing with Cisco equipment to replace it
with to keep the 'two kinds option'). If the grass is always greener on the
other side of the fence (a hefty dose of that going on here I think), get a
small lot on the other side than your main house. Portmasters are great for
most of the modems we deal with, and when we have had problems I've been
very plesed with my a.) the resource of this list and b.) the help from
people at Lucent. At least ya don't have to pay extra to get their
support....
