The trailing commas trick worked.

The modems is a duel (v.90 and flex) Hayes Ext. It would be nice if I didn't
have to do this.

try doing the comma trick. It may be that the changes to improve lousy
modem connects might have impacted your modems negotiation.

It may not like the v.8 tone... either that or is your hayes K56Flex
only? Or a dual? If a dual set the string to do v.90 only and see.
