merit radius and /etc/passwd lookup

We've been using a copy of the merit radius server for our three
portmaster 2e[r]'s and I've recently switched over from user entrys in the
users file to /etc/passwd verification. one result that I've noticed is that
I see two rad_authenticate entrys in the logfiles before the Authentication
entry, where I used to see just one. 1, is that because it's receiving two
authentication requests from the portmasters before it answers, or is the
second rad_authentication request from entering the /etc/passwd lookup portion
of the code? 2, I've heard of using a database for /etc/passwd on some systems,
instead of a flat file lookup, anybody have any pointers for smething like that
for a linux system? 3, really all I want to do is maintain one reasonably
fast, fairly easy to maintain dbase of users for pop/radius authentication
anyone have any pointers to cheap (perferably free) packages that would work
well for an isp?
