Hmmmm....

Sounds to me like your initialization string isn't allowing the
portmaster to reset the connection. OR the portmaster isn't set to reset
the modem. Just out of curiousity... what happens when you type rest all
at the command prompt? Do you hear the modems click?

we had one USR sportster that was configured wrong and would produe
similar but not same results. IE the connection would terminate in the
portmaster and the customer but the modem wouldn't close completely to
get a dial tone.
