What I did to solve the problems is to move the detail file to a directory
for that month and add an extension with the daydate every night at 23:59.
This way I have seperate files for each day which makes it quicker to
generate reports for a single day. It also solves the days/month problem,
as soon as the next month starts you just cat all of last months files
together for one report, so instead of running reports on the 28th, 30th,
31st, you just run it on the 1st.

My solution was to tell all my users that thier time is recorded when they
log off. Since we limit all "regular" users to 8 hrs/day this gets
interesting sometimes, aside from a little whining and begging, most
users understand.
