Depends on the number of lines and frequency of user logins.
If you're getting 10 authentications per second...
You'll need some machine that can handle that..
Like a simple dedicated pentium 90 with 16 mb ...

[Depends on the amounts of users ... my patched
radiusd eats about 6 mb mem for 4000 users ...]

If you're getting 1 auth. per minute .. Even
an 386/4 Mb can do the job ..

Of course I'm talking on linux behaviour .. of FreeBSD...
Base memory needed depends on the used OS ...
I guess you already know that overthere at SGI ...
