I HATE to promote commercial products in an environment such as this but;
There is a spectacular book published by Addison-Wesleye entitled:
_Firewalls_and_Internet_Security_____Repelling_the_Wily_Hacker. It was
written by William Cheswick and Steven Bellovin. I would suggest getting
it (I don't sell it). If you are at all in charge of a network it is of
extreme importance that you have at least a basic understanding of the 7
layers of TCP/IP, that UDP, ICMP & others protocols can sit on top of IP,
and the difference between priviledged and unpriv. ports. Regardless of
the OS the entire Internet communicates with BSD style sockets and anybody
trying to restrict them should first understand them.
