Bingo. More accurately, it's a shell problem. We don't provide shell
accounts here, but we use linux extensively, so I follow many of the linux
mailing lists. This has been discussed in linux-serial, and happens to
people using all sorts of serial equipment (RocketPort serial cards stick
out in my mind for some reason). If you'd like info on these lists, email
majordomo@vger.rutgers.edu with the command `help' on a single line in the
