'contrib' need not be publicly writable. It would be a directory,
maintained by Livingston, containing tools contributed by Livingston
customers. A disclaimer, found in the README file or the message
provided by the ftp daemon, would deny any responsibility for the
quality of the code, etc .....

Many other vendors maintain such a directory and it makes finding
tools related to their product much easier.
