They buy pormtasters and then get rid of the serial cards.

My one experience with calling livingston support wasn't
responded to promptly, actually, but it didn't really matter because
the problem was with Pacbell, not my portmaster. (Took 'em 2.5 weeks
after my frame relay line was promised to get it down.. damn
monopoly.)
