Windows 95 PPP configuration????

I would like some help on what is needed to have windows 95 connect
to a portmaster via ppp/modem? When I try to sit up the tcp/ip
configuration on my win95 system. And established a connection. All I
get is garbage on my screen. The portmaster has been sit up to to a
ppp Ie valid login and ip address.
I know that I should not had upgrade to win95, but my wife does work at
home and the law firm has upgraded everyone to windows95.
