It's a fair bet that when you lose carrier, it's your carrier (TelCo). I'll
emphasize this point further ...

Yes, both are local calls, but did you know that depending on how you get
your service you might not dial through the same CO switch after _dozens_
of calls? The fact that it also happens from outside your dialing area
tells me that it's a TelCo problem on the site (your network) end.
