I expect it may perhaps be the quality of switches your telco is using..
Old exchange maybe? I found that was the case here.. The modems would drop
carrier.. Still happens if the line quality becomes unacceptable to what the
modem thinks it may require. Very, very rare now though.
The portmaster has nothing to do with it.
I was actually playing with a few modems while the telco was replacing switches.
.. I had an opportunity to test before, and after..WoW! What a difference it made.

I have no secret.. but to offer something more while I have the forum here...
Some modems have a command to check the line while connected. Use +++ to return
to command mode and then issue the command. I did that occassionally, once even
told the telco about the results being way off the scale on the rotten end and
they thought I was nuts. Then after the new switches where in place and I
checked again it was 90% better.
