*****Attention Network Managers, Administrators, Planners, Designers,
Engineers, Consultants*****
*****Call for Papers***
Data Communications Management (DCM), a reference service and CD-ROM from
Auerbach Publications--seeks feature-length articles on a wide range of
networking topics. Articles should speak directly to the needs of the
people who manage communications networks and network-based applications
in business settings. DCM readers are managers in mainstream IS
departments, but they are not so far removed from the network technology
that details of network operations and capabilities are no longer
relevant.
Specific subjects we are seeking articles on include (but are not limited
to) the following. We welcome other original article ideas:
- Enterprise network architecture/planning--e.g., high-throughput LAN
design; switched LANs vs. ATM; broadband and wireless networks; network
capacity planning for data warehouse applications
- Internetworking --e.g., IP over ATM, collapsed backbone architecture:
readiness to handle bandwidth demands; dynamic IP addressing; ISDN vs. V.*
modems
- Internet and distributed computing applications--ideas/techniques for
doing business overring interactive services; electronic funds transfer
over the Internet; telecommuting
- Networked multimedia--e.g., understanding networked multimedia; workflow
automation and collaborative computing
- Needs assessment, selection, implementation of network HW/SW--e.g.,
roles of NetWare and Windows NTapplication servers; security and support
for Internet servers; benchmarks of network performance
- Premises infrastructure and desktop connectivity--e.g., update on FDDI
(include gigabit switched FDDI); survey of mobile data technology
products and services
- Network infrastructure--e.g., new LAN/SNA gateways; intra- and
interdomain routing protocols: RIP, IS-IS, OSFP, NLSP, RTMp, IGRP and
IDRP, BGP, EGP [note: we're seeking an article to simply explain what
these protocols are, how they work, and what a network designer needs to
know to choose the right ones]
- Distributed computing technologies--e.g., understanding packets, ports,
sockets, RPC, message queuing; distributed objects (CORBA, OLE/COM); using
distributed message queuing to integrate client/server with legacy apps
- Management and administration--e.g., hidden costs of managing an
Internet connection; software distribution systems; DNS administration;
intellectual property rights and the Net; reducing LAN administrative
management costs
- Network management and control--e.g., practical network and systems
management: platforms and tools (comparison of NetView for AIX, OpenView,
SunNet Manager, others); managing AppleTalk networks; integrating
management systems
- Security--e.g., security principles and protocol standards; Kerberos and
other authentication systems; Internet security issues and techniques
- New directions--e.g., IPng; gigabit and ATM network architectures;
congestion control and performance monitoring trends
- Carrier services--e.g., updates on ISDN, frame relay, wireless
***Payment and Review Policy**We pay a flat-fee honorarium of $500 for
original articles on acceptance. Authors also receive complimentary
reprints of their published articles. All articles are reviewed by a
technial reviewer for relevance, timeliness, technical accuracy, and scope
of coverage. About 75% of all our articles go through some rework to
better target the content for our audience.
*****Length and Format Requirement ** Manuscripts should be 2,500-4,000
words. Submit on PC-compatible 3.5" disk as WordPerfect 5.0, WordPerfect
6.0 for Windows, or ASCII text. Use headings and subheads to
organize/emphasize major points. Include a brief bio--at minimum we need
your title, company name, city/state location, and phone number.
