basically, the theory is that the modem interprets something in a disconnect
series as a command and thus gets set off-hook, or hangs, or whatever. DUMB
mode makes it not understand any commands at all. For some reason setting
it to DUMB mode has fixed a lot of problems with the centry racks, including
th emodems not answering (AA off) after a disconnect, and the modem hanging
with only the MR light on, which needs a hard-reset to fix.

well, I think what happens is the portmaster cycles DTR too soon or too late
which is what causes the cycling condition. I've asked hays for an S
register that sets the wait time for DTR cycle, to no avail. Thsi is why I
set it to &d2. But &d2 not resttting the modem after DTR really DOES drop,
this causes modem weirdness as described above (modem not going back to the
original settings after a user hangs up), which is where dumb mode comes in.
DUMB mode is documented on the century-2, but not the century16 (the original )
