Since it does seem to be an actual problem (one of my users was unable to
log on while this was occuring), here's an official "what the heck?" report.

ComOS: 3.3.1c1
PM: PM2E-30
30 modems attached

Command> show mem
System memory 1048576 bytes - 882280 used, 166296 available
176:0 160:6 1152:1 640:2 144:4 128:4 80:10 2048:5 96:1 16:185 208:1 32:10
System nbufs 1400 - 130 used, 1270 available

(plenty of memory available)

SNMP, IPX disabled.

The problem doesn't seem to happen all the time. I observed it while I
had an administrative telnet open to the portmaster, had set console and
set debug 0x51.

I'd really like to know what it portends, given that my user was unable
to login successfully when it was occuring.
