A digital modem is a DSP - it does all the handling digitally right from the
incoming signal. What Cisco does for example is to take that incoming
digital signal, convert it to analog, and then feed it into OEM'd microcomm
modems. The modems think it is just another incoming call.

With a digital modem solution you can change modem settings even if the
line is active. The data path is clearer and more direct. And they are
tightly integrated into the product, not something glued on.
