Well, with both of the LECs in my area, the per-channel cost
for PRI is twice that of the BRI product. I find this ridiculous.
The Telco reps give nebulous justifications involving all kinds of
supposedly advanced business features with the PRI, but it just
doesn't make sense to me that they should charge twice as much for a
service that takes 1/12 of a pair to deliver vs. 1/2. I've got to
imagine that the cost of the copper to reach the customer outweighs
the cost of the NIDs at both ends of a PRI.
One telco went as far as to allege that the California
Public Utility Commision is forcing them to keep their PRI pricing
artificially high to put them at a disadvantage W.R.T. smaller telcos.
So, I'm wondering what it's like for other folks, that they're
so much more interested in a PRI product than one for BRI. I'd sure
love to use PRI for ease of management, but I haven't been able to justify
its increased monthly cost.
