Now someone needs to develop smart(er) modems that can report their
status (connected at 26400", "retraining to xxx bps", "lost carrier due
to retraining too low", "lost carrier due to line noise", etc.) to the
serial port via a "status" message sent via a specific serial port pin pair
(so the Portmaster could pick up the message and report it via syslog etc).

Good/Bad idea?
