I don't mean to utterly slam USR...but they have it coming :)
We just bought a USR MP/8 from Capella. It arrived with several
scratches through the paint, lots of chipped paint around the screws that
hold it together, and 2 screws floating around _inside_ the power
supply. Talk about quality and workmanship. I bet they have a lab full
of chimps throwing these things together.
We also have a 16 card Digicom rack mountable modem system with 4 cards.
Each card is 4 v.34 modems. This has been a trouble-free unit. Cards
are hot swappable too. The only faults are that the docs included are
totally inadaquate in their coverage of the command set...but it's Rockwell
based, so a quick trip to the appropriate search engine and WWW site, and
I had "full" docs. The other is that it requires cooling and includes
none...so a trip to radio shack, some mail order muffin fans, and a bit
of soldering and I had fan boxes for it. Oh...it doesn't do v.34+ either
and is not flash upgradable...but it's about $260 per port, real dense
ports/space-wise, and stable. And none of the parts so far have arrived
broken :) Another plus is the rj-11 sockets are duplex...2 lines on each
2 pair cable...so make custom cables and use 1/2 as many.
