OK fine. Kill my idea! ;) (I use 25pin-to-RJ45 adapters myself!!!)

Better idea: After modems disconnect, the PM could send an ATI(some number)
to retrieve the 'lost carrier' reason that the modem would store about the
previous connection. The PM could also grab the CONNECT 28800 line when
the modem connects, couldn't it?
