Well, to make my BitSurfer Pro do 2B, I had to figure out how to do PAP on
my linux box (because with at%a2=95, you don't get a login prompt).

I think the arguments to pppd are:

user me remotename thatguy

And make sure you have an entry in your /etc/ppp/pap-secrets for

me thatguy password

It took me a few hours to figure out that I had to provide the remotename
on the command line

With 1B I was getting 3-5K incoming and 8K outgoing. With 2B I'm getting 8K
incoming, and 12K outgoing. Far from optimal, but it's not like I have a $300
smart serial card with a 1K buffer. It's a bloody 16550 (A I hope).
