A good generic init string for most (90%) of modems dialing into a PM is...

AT&F1&C1&D3S0=0&W

&F1 -> load factory defaults (try &F if &F1 dosen't work)
&C1 -> carrier detect
&D3 -> reset when DTR is dropped (try &D2 if &D3 dosen't work)
S0=0-> Don't answer phone
&W -> Save it all

A good generic string for modems connected to portmasters is the same except
change s0=0 to s0=1
