Problem with nameserver and PPP

Is it correct that the IP address of the nameserver is given to the
client in the PPP negotiation phase? I tried this with a Windows 95
client (server assigned nameserver), but when I try to ping a host by
name, the client is unable to resolve the name. If I put in the IP
address of the nameserver manually on the client, it works.

I've used the pmconsole utility to verify the setup on the PortMaster
(menu selection Edit and choose Global). I entered the IP address of the
nameserver (the FQDN was given at first), saved and checked; the FQDN
was back again. I hope the PortMaster doesn't provide the client with
the FQDN instead of the IP address since that would be useless.

Is there a way to give the client information about the nameserver
through PPP, or must I enter it manually?

Thanks in advance for any help or input.
