There is a way to convert the DB25 Livingston port to RJ45.
We make these adapters in either a kit form or we have
prepinned versions for the Portmasters. (We know pinning
is no fun)

As for the Patch Cables, using solid wire is a no-no. The
strain solid wire places on modular RJ45 plugs can cause
reliability problems. Most people do not realize this, but
Category 5 stranded Patch cables are plentiful and
inexpensive. They offer superior hi speed data handling
as well as flexibilty.
