ppp_sync failed???

I am trying to get a portmaster to dial into another one through
one of the async ports. If I set a predefined ip address in both the
location on the dialing unit and in Radius on the answering unit I
get the following messages in my log:

Oct 11 02:09:39 pm01.mead.net dialnet: port S4 PPP succeeded dest Negotiated

msh.mead.net

Moments after the modems connect the send and receive lights flash furiously
back and forth for about 30 seconds, then both hang up. If I remove the IP
address from the radius entry or the location entry I get the same
result, but I do not get the log 3rd line in the log with the ppp_sync
error. I've included the appropriate info below. If this is a terminally
stupid question with some obvious answer I apologize in advance. TIA
