radius problems and bsdi 2.1

hi,
i've asked about this in the bsdi-users and have checked the archives.

my server cannot find radiusd or ./radiusd, nor is radius invoked at all
when using the "DEFAULT" for unix passwords. what are some ways i can
track down the problem, assuming i have /etc/raddb, users, and clients
setup correctly?
