Jeremy,
For our first 70 lines, we use the same modem/setup.
What's TOTALLY weird about all of this, is that we have THREE Livingston's,
ALL of them are IDENTICAL, (OS-Version#-wise) and we had one of the
Livingstons hanging up on our customers too. (Actually, it was resetting
itself at LEAST once every 24 hours.)
I upgraded the software to the Livingston to 3.3.3 and this system now has
an uptime of MANY weeks. Something we're totally amazed at. (I left the
others alone, no sense in trying to fix something that's working fine.)
About the Microcom modems, we got ahold of Microcom and told them we were
using a Livingston. They told us "Ahh... we know about those" you need to
set the modem(s) with this string, and then put them into "dumb" mode. (You
put them in "dumb" mode by setting them up with the init string, then
switching dip #7 to the other position.)
The "init string" that we were given by Microcom, I'm afraid that my tech
support person has, and he's on vacation. (I know that's lame, I'm sorry,
but I don't have it. Why can't I get it from the Livingston? Get this, the
init string puts the modem in non-echo mode, THUS, you TOO have to tell the
Livingston NOT to expect a result from the modem. (The expected result
should be NOTHING.) Worse yet, when you 'attach' to the modem and give the
ol' "AT<enter>" you're not expected to get anything.
I know this sounds like a totally weird setup, but I assure you, after
pulling my hair out of my head for a LONG time, then putting this
information together, our customers are A LOT happier.
Please feel free to call me at my office, 401-845-8800, should you have any
other questions.
Bill
