I did this once. When inorganic5 was on campus (and I was a grad student)
we had either a very minor fire or false alarm (never found out which) but
we rushed out of the building, and lacking a recent backup, I went over to
the next building were the departmental unix system was and started
backing up key directories of my server to my home dir on that server.
Here in Gainesville, we get surges and brownouts often enough that a UPS
is mandatory. At my apartment, we even have occasional several minute
blackouts when a squirel trips one of the big circuit breakers on the
power poles. Anyone ever seen instant baked squirel? I'm not kidding.
