Slow Authentication Observation on Win95

On one of these list I saw a few messages about people reporting that some
of their users are reporting slow authentication when using Windows 95 to
connect to the NAS, but when they use Win 3.11 or a MAC the authentication
goes more quickly. Here's an interesting observation I made that may be
helpful to someone.

I have a dial-up connection configured to "Bring up terminal window after
dialing". Once the terminal window comes up and I enter the username and PW
I see the PPP string come from the NAS almost instantly and then I hit
"Continue". Now before the Window that says "Connected at 28800" comes up,
and during the "Verifying Password" or "Logging into Network" Window, I
launch a Winsock app such as Telnet or Eudora...and the app comes right up
and working. A few seconds later the apps is momentarily interupted by the
"Connected at 28800" Window. I minimize the box and move on.

Thinking out loud......

Now the big question is...What is Win95 doing? It should only take a few
seconds to sync the PPP..and that must be happening otherwise the winsock
app would not work. It could be that Win95 is looking for a MS Network
protocol and/or PDC but if Netbuei and IPX are shut off that shouldnt happen.

I wonder if changing that "Log On to Network" checkbox on Dial-Up Networking
will make a big difference? I think I have done this test with it checked
and not checked.

Anyway thats what I have found and now I have a clear and positive
defense/explanation when a customer says "It takes so long to log in" (30
seconds in somecases)

If anyone has an explanation as to what Win95 is doing between the
acceptance of the PPP string and popping up the connected box, I'd be
interested to hear it.

Thanks,

Scott
