We offer PM-2E-10I-U units with 1MB of memory because if the unit is being
used solely for BRI access, 1MB should be enough. It is when the unit has a
mixture of BRI and asynch (specifically when the unit has 1 BRI card and 2
asynch cards) that the unit requires more than 1MB of RAM. This is because
async cards use more system memory--they do not have the on-board buffers
used on the MOD-10I BRI cards. Therefore in response to your question of
why we offer 1MB instead of just shipping with 4MB RAM, we do so because in
the popular ISDN only configuration 1MB should be adequate. Finally, keep
in mind that we are working with a "rule of thumb" here. If you have large
routing tables, user tables, location tables, etc. your RAM mileage may vary...
