The culprit turned out to be the logdaemon_5.3 security wrapper for
in.rlogind. Thanks to bri@livingston.com for helping track this down! I
reported the problem (related to IP fragmentation) to the logdaemon
wrapper, but thought I'd let everybody know what it was so it won't happen
to you.
