Sounds like a game of 'telegraph line'.

This started internally with a couple of sites that were having problems.
And to debug it we had them use individual cables - the better to work on
things one by one. There have never been any confirmation of problems with
the HD port nor cables, and we use them ourselves all the time. I think I
heard of one cold solder issue, but that happens and can happen to any board.
It doesn't mean jack about the general health of the HD port.

As it worked along it probably mutated from 'try the individual ports' to
'don't use the HD port'.
