Could be negotiating more realistic line speeds relative to the line
quality. Older sportsters tended to connect high and retrain to lower
speeds at a fairly rapid rate. Connect to one of the faster ones and use
it for a bit, then escape to command mode and use (I think) ati6 to check
your current speed.
