As far as WAN capabilities both the PM-3 and MAX 4002/4004 (don't even
consider the MAX 4000, it is very outdated) handle T1, FracT1, and
Channelized-T1 WAN routing with PPP or Frame Relay. The PM-3 also handles
E1, frac-E1, and Channelized-E1. This is included in the cost of the PM-3,
some of these features are pricey extras on the MAX.
For dialin the PM-3 accepts PRI today, with Channelized-T1/E1 dialin a few
weeks away. The MAX does both today - but again, you pay extra. Channelized
will be a free upgrade on the PM-3.
With the PM-3 you can use ALL channels for modems, up to 48 in the US and
up to 60 in Europe. A MAX 4004 has 4 PRI/T1 in one chassis which can be 96
channels but it can only take *72* modems. So you can have 24 lines with
no ability to take a modem, which will be even more of an issue when people
start buying chassis to do 56K central site. A line without a modem is
useless for 56K.
> What i mean is, if i connected to the pm3 with a isdn, will pm3
>know that i have a isdn and move down to the that area that uses isdn
I don't understand this. Do you mean can the PM-3 autodetect the type of
call and automatically handle ISDN or Analog calls on the same line? If that
is what you are asking, then the answer is yes it can. Using the SAME phone
number. The MAX requires one number for ISDN and another for analog to
differentiate.
And for all this, the PM-3 is less expensive per port. And with RIPv2 and
BGP(4) coming, it will be even more powerful. (I don't believe Ascend is
doing BGP(4) on the MAX, but I'm not sure.)
