WinNT 4.0 Dial-up

I just had my first run-in with NT 4.0 dial-up. It seems that the default
LCP sequence has some oddities:
------
Received UNKNOWN on port S0 of 14 bytes containing:
0c 02 00 12 00 00 5a 8c 4d 53 52 41 53 56 34 2e
30 30
Received UNKNOWN on port S0 of 18 bytes containing:
0c 03 00 16 00 00 5a 8c 4d 53 52 41 53 2d 31 2d
53 55 4d 4e 45 52
------

And that NT 4.0 sends the domain name with the PAP request:

------
Received PAP_AUTH_REQ on port S0 of 31 bytes containing:
ENTERPRISE\mbrenner <passwd> (instead of just mbrenner <passwd>)

Sending PAP_AUTH_NAK to port S0 of 18 bytes containing:
03 06 00 12 0d 49 6e 76 61 6c 69 64 20 4c 6f 67
69 6e
------

which causes authentication failure! There appear to be two workarounds:
1) Clear the DOMAIN field of the dial-up networking dialog
or
2) Choose the "script" tab and run the "generic login" script. (The
generic script uses the "ogin:" and "assword:" trick instead of PAP.

Question: What is the extra stuff NT is sending that the PM2eR (ComOS 3.3.2)
doesn't recognize? Why did Gates & Co. break this after Win95 went so well?

Mike
