I had the same problem, and got an answer from someone, can't remember who.
You have to change the default in the makefile from;
LIBS = -ldb
to
LIBS = -lgdbm
This seems to be dependant on the version of slakware/redhat/whatever.
On 3 of 5 boxes it worked as the default, and the other 2 no.
