Since you start on this!

Last week i was at a Cisco presentation and the engineer told us that :

"The ONLY product that is fully digital is the TELEBIT MICA Technologie that they bought to put in there 5200 series of product!"

We currently have a MAX4K and a TELEBIT MicaBlazer. We like both but the Mica really outperform the MAX :-(

Subject: (ASCEND) Looking for clarification on Ascend DM-12 cards.

We just talked to Rockwell today.

According to Rockwell *no one* has modems with a digital interface from them.
They claim the Ascend DM-12 chipsets are not pure digital modems, but rather
DSPs with coupled codecs that require an analog signal. According to Rockwell
their next chipset will be a 33.6 set that does have a digital interface.
But that will still have masked ROM, requiring a chip swap for 56K.
And that the first 56K chips will probably have masked ROM, necessitating
another chip swap for the ITU-T spec when it is out.

So now I'm confused.

I have seen Ascend claiming that they have a pure digital solution in the
DM-12, and it is only the old DM-8s that have codecs. We've also been seeing
claims that 'upgradable' modems have been shipping since November.

Basically - what's the story? Kevin, can you clarify this?

I've been getting heat for 'misrepresenting' the MAX's modem technology.
And I was prepared to change, and in fact had already changed, what I was
saying about the DM-12s. Then I get this which makes it seem like I was
correct before I changed. Frankly I don't care which is correct, but I'd
like to know so I don't mislead people.

Any MAX users want to get the chip number off of the DM-12's Rockwell chipset?

Actually, can someone do that and then check Rockwell's datasheet? That way
you don't have to take my word, or Kevin's word, etc, etc.

Hopefully, that will stop speculation.
