Changin MTU on a Hardwired conecction?

Hi;

I have been trying to change the MTU for a hardwired async link from
1500 to 576 or 512.

I change it with set s0 mtu 576, and it shows it as the default mtu.
I also change it on the central side where the PM is dialing into.

However when the conecction comes back up, it is set to 1500.
I have tried save all, reset s0, and also reboot.

On the remote site I have a IRX-211 with 3.2.1R, and
on the central site I have a PM2E with 3.3.1

Anybody have any clues????
