We use them on linux based servers with an active getty (mgetty).
Here is my setup conversation:

With something like a portmaster, you would need to change the Q0E0 and
ATS0 settings to Q1E0 (quiet mode) and S0=1 (answer on first ring).
I've never actually used a portmaster serial port, so you're really on
your own with them. All my PM's are for ISDN only.
You can write these settings into NVRAM for use with dumb terminal
servers, personally I reset the modems after every call.
