Nope, flow control between the modems will regulate the speed difference.
If the modems fail to train, or retrain if a line becomes noisy can cause a
disconnect. A very useful tool in ver 3.3.2 and up is

set console
set debug term on

This will display the reason for disconnect to the console which can help
you determine why the connection is being lost.
