Not 8bit clean?

We recently moved all of our facilties and upgraded several portmasters
to ComOS 3.5, since then several shell users have been complaining
that sz locks up on them when they are trying to transfer binary
files. Looking at the machine they're sitting idle in a shell,
however they say that they're completely locked up. Sounds like
someone sent an XOFF and we're waiting for an XON. Is this a problem
of the Portmaster, or shall I be looking for the modems and the
culprit. (We also upgraded the PROM's to the latest courier code.)
