I know that the PM11's don't support radius accounting, nor is there any
plans for the upgrade.
I am in the position of having no choice other than to use the syslog
features to generate my accounting data. I don't particularly like this
idea, for obvious reasons. Sending out unvalidated udp packets and trying
to maintain an accurate accounting system seems to be at cross-purposes.
There is no way I can get around it, however. We aren't upgrading any
hardware in any near future, never mind throwing out 9 pm11s.
To compound the problem, I have on pm2er which DOES support radius
accounting, and I have been generating the appropriate detail log from it.
This means that each month I have one detail log, as well as a
portmaster.log file containing the syslog entries of the pm11s.
If I keep maintaining the detail log from the 2er, I would have to turn
off syslog accounting on it (otherwise I would have duplicate entries and
possibly skewed accounting data). If I do this, I would have to parse the
detail logs, and the syslog data and merge them together to form my final
data.
I guess this wouldn't be out of the question, just a lot of work.
The other option I see is that I could just turn off the radaccounting and
use syslog accounting throughout. That way there is one log file to parse
and that's the end of it. I've allready hacked the excellent pmstats
package (I hope the author doesn't mind) to produce data in the format
that our accounting software understands.
The down side to this is I am basing my entire accounting package on udp
packet transfers, which may or may not be accurate.
If anybody has some advice for me, I would greatly appreciate hearing it.
